MATV & SMATV Systems
Centralized TV Distribution for Hotels, Condominiums and Commercial Buildings
MATV (Master Antenna Television) is a centralized television distribution system designed to receive TV signals from one or more sources and distribute them to multiple televisions or outlets throughout a building or property.
Instead of installing a separate antenna or receiver for every television, signals are received and managed at a central headend, then distributed through an RF coaxial network to multiple TV points.
MATV systems are widely used in hotels, resorts, condominiums, apartments, hospitals, dormitories, schools, offices and commercial buildings, particularly in projects where a large number of televisions need to receive a centrally managed channel lineup.
What is SMATV?
SMATV (Satellite Master Antenna Television) expands the concept of MATV by integrating satellite TV signals into the centralized television distribution system.
A modern SMATV system can receive and combine content from multiple sources, including:
Satellite TV
Terrestrial digital TV antennas
Pay TV receivers and Set-Top Boxes (STBs)
Cable TV sources
Media players
Computers
CCTV cameras
Digital signage or information channels
Other HDMI, AV or IP video sources
The selected channels and content can then be processed at the central headend and distributed throughout the building.
Modern Digital MATV & SMATV Systems
Modern MATV and SMATV systems have evolved significantly from traditional analogue TV distribution.
Today, centralized TV systems can integrate digital broadcasting, satellite, RF and IP technologies, depending on the infrastructure and requirements of each project.
Digital TV signals can be processed using technologies and standards such as DVB-S / DVB-S2 for satellite receptionand DVB-T / DVB-T2 for terrestrial and RF digital TV distribution.
Video from HDMI, AV or other sources can also be encoded and integrated into the system, allowing properties to create their own internal channels for information, entertainment, CCTV monitoring or other applications.
How Does a MATV / SMATV System Work?
A typical system consists of:
Signal Sources → Headend Equipment → Signal Processing / Modulation → RF Distribution Network → TV Outlets → Televisions
The Headend acts as the central control point of the system. It receives signals from different sources, selects and processes the required channels, and prepares them for distribution throughout the property.
Depending on the system design, equipment may include satellite receivers, encoders, IP gateways, DVB-T/T2 modulators, amplifiers, combiners, splitters and other RF distribution equipment.
This centralized architecture makes it easier to manage channels, maintain the system and expand the number of TV outlets as project requirements change.
Applications of MATV & SMATV Systems
MATV and SMATV solutions are suitable for:
Hotels and resorts
Condominiums
Apartments and dormitories
Hospitals
Schools and universities
Office buildings
Commercial buildings
Factories and industrial facilities
Government buildings
Large residential projects
For properties with an existing coaxial cable network, a modern digital MATV/SMATV system can also provide an efficient way to upgrade TV services while continuing to utilize the existing RF infrastructure.
MATV, SMATV and Digital TV Distribution
The main difference is that MATV traditionally refers to a master antenna system for distributing terrestrial television signals, while SMATV incorporates satellite reception into the centralized distribution system.
In modern installations, however, the system can integrate multiple types of signal sources and technologies. The most appropriate architecture may combine Satellite, DVB-S/S2, DVB-T/T2, RF and IP-based video distribution according to the requirements of the property.
A properly designed MATV or SMATV system provides a centralized, scalable and manageable TV distribution solution for buildings that require reliable television service across multiple rooms or TV outlets.
CATV (Community Antenna Television / Cable TV) is a centralized TV distribution system designed for larger coverage areas than a typical MATV system. It can distribute television signals across multiple buildings, residential developments, communities, campuses, and other large-scale properties through a cable distribution network.
A CATV system can integrate multiple signal sources and technologies, including Digital TV, Satellite TV, DVB-T/T2, DVB-S/S2, and RF distribution, with the system designed according to the required coverage area and number of TV outlets.
Because CATV networks cover larger areas and longer distribution distances, the system requires reliable, scalable, and robust equipment suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations.
Ideal for: Residential developments • Multi-building projects • Large hotels and resorts • Universities • Hospitals • Factories and industrial facilities
